Everything You Want to Know About Lip Filler Before You Book

I do lip filler consultations daily, and I can tell you the conversation almost always starts the same way. Someone sits down, pulls up a photo on their phone, and says “I want something like this, but I do not want to look like I had anything done.” That is the whole ballgame right there. And honestly? That is exactly the kind of patient I love working with.

So let me tell you how I think about lip filler, what the experience looks like in my hands, and why I think you might be closer to ready than you think.

Lip Filler vs. Lip Flip: Which One Do You Actually Need?

I get this question constantly, so let me break it down simply.

A lip flip is neurotoxin (Botox, Xeomin, Jeuveau, Daxxify, Letybo, Dysport), not filler. A small amount goes just above the upper lip, the [orbicularis oris] muscle relaxes, and the lip rolls slightly outward. You get the look of more volume without actually adding any. It is subtle, it lasts six to eight weeks, and for patients who are nervous about filler, it is a great way to dip your toe in.

Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid, something your body already makes naturally, to physically add volume and shape. The results last six months to over a year and give us a lot more to work with creatively. A lot of my patients end up doing both together, which gives you fullness and definition at the same time. We will figure out together which direction makes sense for you.

“You Don’t Want Your Lips Entering the Room Before You Do”

I say this all the time and I mean it. My entire philosophy with lip filler is built around balance and proportion to your face. Before I ever pick up a syringe, I am studying your face and your lips. The ratio of upper to lower, the shape of your cupid’s bow, the way your lips move when you talk and smile. I am also looking at your facial support. I am working with what is already yours, not replacing it.

I also know when to say no. If I do not think more filler is the right answer for what you are trying to achieve, I am going to tell you that. We are not the med spa that is going to keep adding product just because you asked. Every provider on our team is a Radiant Aesthetics trained RN or higher, and we all share the same commitment to results that look natural, balanced, and like the best version of you.

Something else I will look at during your consultation is whether your lips actually have the facial support they need. A lot of people come in focused on their lips when the real issue is that the surrounding structure, think cheeks, chin, or overall facial balance, needs some attention first. Lips sit in the context of your whole face, and when that foundation is in place, filler looks dramatically more natural. Sometimes the best thing I can do for your lips is address what is around them before we ever add volume to them. I will always be upfront with you about that.

What Your Appointment Will Actually Feel Like

I want you to be comfortable, so I take numbing seriously. We use a special compounded numbing cream before we start, and for patients who want even more comfort, I offer a dental block that fully numbs the area. Some patients have heard of using ice to numb, and yes, it technically works, but you have to be pretty tough to get through it that way. My preference is that you actually enjoy the experience.

Numbing cream takes the longest at 30 minutes and the injections take 15 to 20 minutes. I check symmetry throughout and make adjustments as I go. Mild swelling and possible bruising over the next day or two is normal, and most patients are back to their regular routine the same day. It takes 3 weeks for complete healing and tissue integration.

Why Safety Matters to Me

Lip filler is a medical procedure, and I treat it exactly like one. We keep Hylenex on hand at all times, which is the enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid filler quickly when needed. We also have an ultrasound machine available in the event of a vascular occlusion so we can respond immediately. You are in the care of nurses, not just injectors, and that distinction matters.
