What Is the PREEMPT Protocol?

The PREEMPT Protocol stands for Phase III REsearch Evaluating Migraine Prophylaxis Therapy. It is the only FDA-approved, locally administered neurotoxin treatment for chronic migraine prevention. The FDA granted approval in 2010, and it has since become a trusted standard of care for qualifying patients.

This treatment delivers precise injections into 31 fixed sites across 7 key muscle groups. These sites target the head and neck, including the forehead, temples, back of the head, and neck and shoulder muscles that commonly drive migraine patterns. Most sessions take less than 30 minutes. Treatments repeat every 12 weeks.

The injections move quickly. Most patients describe a series of small, brief sensations across the treatment areas. There is no downtime. You can drive yourself home and return to your normal routine the same day. We recommend tracking your headache days in a journal or app between appointments. This helps us monitor your progress and fine tune your plan as you go.

TheraTox™ works well for adults who experience headaches 15 or more days per month. It is a strong fit for patients who have not found adequate relief through oral preventive medications. It also works well for those who prefer to skip daily pills.
